How resharpening a large drill bit

A frequently used drill bit will become dull quickly. Purchasing new drill bits every time this happens is expensive, not to mention a waste of a perfectly good bit. The solution is to sharpen your own drill bits at home with a bench grinder and sharpening jig. The 82-degree drill bit is used to drill a hole when a flat surface is desired at the bottom of the hole; this can be common with countersink holes for screws. Does this Spark an idea?

1.Install the drill-bit sharpening jig onto the bench grinder's mount. You may need to fasten it with a C-clamp or another mechanism depending on the design of your grinder.

2.Fasten the drill bit to the jig holder by loosening the retaining screw and inserting the drill bit into the hole. The retaining screw will be perpendicular to the drill bit and will tighten to secure it in its location. Align the drill bit's cutting edge with the guild's markings and tighten the retaining screw. The guild is what secures the drill bit to the jig. Some guilds come with a magnifying glass to make sure the edges are aligned perfectly.

3.Set the sharpening angle on the jig by using the jig's gauge. One side of the gauge will rest on the grinding wheel and the other on the jig. Once you have reached the desired angle, fasten the tightening screw. This will be the screw that, when loose, allows the jig to change its angle to the grinding stone. Once tightened, it will maintain the desired sharpening angle.

4.Adjust the jig's setting screw so the bit is 1/32 inch from the grinder's stone. The setting screw is what controls the distance from the tip of the drill bit to the surface of the grinding stone. Start the grinder on its lowest setting and adjust the setting screw so that the drill bit just touches the stone.

5.Slide the bit back and start the grinder. Push the bit forward into the stone and work it back and forth along the stone, applying gentle pressure.

6 Turn the bit over and repeat the procedure to sharpen the other side of the bit.
