The right way to grind drill bit

In order to save money in a machine shop environment, it is wise to re-sharpen drills with a grinder when they become dull. By understanding how a drill works, you can create a new edge on any used drills that will have them cutting as new. By making sure that the relief is properly ground, you can also assure that pressure will not build and cause a machine to overload, resulting in a broken drill.

1 Grind off the dull tip of the drill in order to grind a new edge on it. Using a bench grinder, push the tip of the drill into a diamond wheel until the tip is completely flat. This will allow you to put a new edge on the drill for use in a manual mill or CNC machine. You can also use a cut-off saw to remove the end of the drill.

2 Turn the drill 45 degrees while also tipping it 45 degrees downward toward the floor. You need to create the relief, which is the area just behind the tip; it supports the edge while cutting the material and will cause excessive loads on the drill while cutting. Removing the relief is the most important aspect of grinding a drill edge.

Push the drill into the grinder with moderate force while sweeping the drill upwards away from the grinder but only grind the side you are working on. Make sure you only grind half the drill as you need a defined point on the end for the drill to cut material at its center.

4 Hold the drill horizontal to put the cutting edge on this side of the drill. Keep it turned at the same 45 degree angle to follow the new edge but make sure the drill is no longer pointed downwards. Push moderately until a knife edge is created.

5 Turn the drill 90 degrees from the angle you are holding it at and grind the other side of the drill in the same way you ground the first side, making sure to remove the material behind the edge you will soon create. The process should create a center point for the drill to center-cut naturally.

6 Repeat step 4 for the other side to complete the drill grinding process. You can also use a grinding wheel on a stand-up grinder rather than a bench grinder.
